Who's behind this?
Hi, I'm Tariq
I'm Tariq Peters, founder of Follow The Phases, a brand authority agency for fractional finance founders and founder-owned finance practices.
I'm also the creator of the P.H.A.S.E.S.® Brand Authority System, the methodology behind this guide.
I work with finance leaders because the pattern is remarkably consistent: deep expertise, strong client credibility and a large proportion of new work still arriving through referrals, relationships and the founder's own reputation.
Referrals are proof that the work is trusted. But when they are the only meaningful route in, new opportunities depend heavily on other people remembering to mention you, at the right time, to the right person.
This guide introduces the system I use to address that: the Authority Flywheel™. It helps turn private credibility into recognised authority, then gives that authority somewhere commercially useful to go.

The problem
The referral dependency problem
Most founder-owned finance practices are built on referrals.
That is not a weakness. It is evidence that the work is trusted.
The risk is dependency. When most new clients arrive through somebody else's recommendation, the practice has limited control over when the next opportunity appears, who introduces it or how consistently those introductions happen.
Timing
You can't schedule it
Referrals arrive when somebody else remembers you, not necessarily when your capacity is ready.
Reach
You can't widen it on demand
Growth remains heavily influenced by the networks of people who already know your work.
Concentration
You don't want one source carrying everything
One quiet referrer, one lost relationship or one change in circumstances can materially affect opportunity flow.
Referrals are a reward for past work. Recognised authority gives that credibility more ways to create future opportunities.
In Beyond Referrals, I reviewed 200 UK fractional CFO and FD profiles to understand how experienced finance professionals were translating private credibility into visible authority. The findings group the market into three tiers: Referral-Dependent, Building Authority and Authority-Established.
